Miles Above the Rest: Long Beach Airport Soars as Official Sponsor of the Long Beach Marathon

Long Beach Airport Celebrates 100 Years with Southern California’s premier fall marathon on the Oceanfront streets of downtown Long Beach on Sunday, October 15

LONG BEACH – Aug. 1, 2023 – Long Beach Airport (LGB) and the Long Beach Marathon and Half Marathon are thrilled to announce the renewal of their partnership, marking a momentous occasion as LGB will soon celebrate its 100-year anniversary. The premier fall marathon in Southern California will welcome runners from across the U.S. to the oceanfront streets of downtown Long Beach for its 39th running on the weekend of October 14-15, 2023.

The partnership renewal reaffirms the shared commitment to promoting health, wellness, and community engagement in the beautiful city of Long Beach. Both LGB and the marathon have been partners in supporting local events, promoting recreational activities, and fostering a sense of community pride in the City of Long Beach. The partnership renewal comes at a historic time, as Long Beach Airport commemorates a century of serving the community and being a vital transportation hub in Southern California.

“As we begin celebrations to mark our centennial anniversary, we are pleased to again support the Long Beach Marathon, one of our city’s very special community events,” said Cynthia Guidry, Long Beach Airport Director. “We welcome out-of-town participants to use our convenient and easygoing airport for their travel arrangements.”

The Long Beach Marathon has become an annual highlight for athletes, runners, and fitness enthusiasts alike with over 17,000 participants expected in October. The event brings together participants from all over the country to experience the scenic beauty and vibrant spirit of Long Beach. Through the partnership with Long Beach Airport, the marathon has grown into a world-class event that embodies the airport’s commitment to excellence and the city’s dedication to fostering a healthy lifestyle.

“Marathon weekend is one of the biggest happenings in Long Beach, combining fitness and community, featuring three-days of events and activities for runners and supporters alike,” said Phyllis Blanchard, Director of Partnerships for the marathon. “With the recent opening of its new Baggage Claim facility to the swaying Palm Trees and easy going vibes, Long Beach Airport represents the quintessential characteristics of the city.”

As part of the partnership celebration, Long Beach Airport will be actively involved in various marathon-related activities, including the two-day Health and Wellness Expo to kickoff event weekend. This integration will enable participants and spectators to engage with Long Beach Airport’s rich history, modern facilities, and its vision for the future.

The marathon weekend happenings kick off on Friday, October 13 with the expo downtown along the Waterfront. The running gets started on Saturday with the Aquarium of the Pacific 5k, the perfect distance for athletes of all abilities. Participants can run or walk the 5k with friends and family or use it as a shakeout run for Sunday’s races.

Sunday’s events include the 26.2-mile Long Beach Marathon, 13.1-mile half-marathon and the popular Bike Tour, which provides avid and leisure cyclists the opportunity to ride on the marathon’s closed roads. The bike tour features all the marathon fun without the run, including a commemorative event shirt, finishers medal, complimentary beer and more. Race weekend concludes with a finish line festival on Marina Green featuring a beer garden and live music.
